Explanation in Agent-Based Modelling: Functions, Causality or Mechanisms?
نویسنده
چکیده
What kind of knowledge can we obtain from agent-based models? The claim that they help us to study the social world needs unpacking. I will defend agent-based modelling against a recent criticisms that undermine its potential as a method to investigate underlying mechanisms and provide explanations of social phenomena. I show that the criticism is unwarranted and the problem can be resolved with an account of explanation that is associated with the social sciences anyway, the mechanism account of explanation developed in Machamer et al. (2000). I finish off discussing the mechanism account with relation to prediction in agent-based modelling.

Possibilistic Explanation
The philosophy literature has been struggling with the problem of defining causality. There has been extensive discussion about it. Hume taught that talk of causation was metaphysics and should be consigned to the flames (D. Hume, 1748). We present a comparison between two approaches that model this notion: The first one is the normative approach which is based on an interventionist conception ...
متن کاملExplaining causal modelling . Or , what a causal model ought to explain
One of the goals of the social sciences is to explain social phenomena. In this explanatory enterprise, causal relations, established by means of the so-called ‘causal models’, play a major role. This paper advances the view that causal models, by modelling causal mechanisms, (ought to) provide an explanation of social phenomena and should be seen as a model of explanation.1
متن کاملAgent-based modelling as scientific method: a case study analysing primate social behaviour.
A scientific methodology in general should provide two things: first, a means of explanation and, second, a mechanism for improving that explanation. Agent-based modelling (ABM) is a method that facilitates exploring the collective effects of individual action selection. The explanatory force of the model is the extent to which an observed meta-level phenomenon can be accounted for by the behav...
متن کاملThe Role of miRNA Dysregulation in Thyroid Cancer Development by Targeting the Main Signaling Pathways
Thyroid cancer is one of the most common malignancies of endocrine glands, causing carcinomas, such as papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. Due to the significance of thyroid carcinomas, identification of the main signaling pathways and the affecting mutations has been considered by researchers. Further studies on the dysregulation of oncogenes in signaling path...
متن کاملModels for Prediction, Explanation and Control: Recursive Bayesian Networks
The Recursive Bayesian Net (RBN) formalism was originally developed for modelling nested causal relationships. In this paper we argue that the formalism can also be applied to modelling the hierarchical structure of mechanisms. The resulting network contains quantitative information about probabilities, as well as qualitative information about mechanistic structure and causal relations. Since i...
